Topaz Procedure
By Dr. Penney

There is a new minimally invasive treatment for heel pain available! Heel pain (plantar fasciitis) is caused by inflammation of a broad ligament on the bottom of the heel. Plantar fasciitis affects more than one-third of the United States population at some point in their life. Ninty percent of people with plantar fasciitis get better with a combiniation of injections, orthotics (custom shoe inserts), and physical therapy but that leaves 10% who end up needing surgery to correct the condition. In the past surgery for heel pain was much more invasive because surgeons would have to make incisions in the side of the heel to cut the plantar fascia ligament. After this procedure patients would have to use either crutches, walker, or wheelchair to stay off of their operated foot for 2-4 weeks.
I have been performing a new surgical treatment called the Topaz plantar fascia release for about 2 years now. Instead of making incisions I only need to make a grid of tiny holes (0.062inch) over the heel to insert a special Radiofreqency (RF) wand that stimulates the ligament to heal itself. And the best things about this new procedure are:1) there is very minimal pain from the procedure itself and 2) that you can walk immediately in a special boot without the need for cruthes/walker/wheelchair etc. I have been having excellent results. Most people get resolution of their heel pain within 1 month (some report almost immediate pain relief).
If you suffer from heel pain, and especially if you have tried various other treatments without success, call my office and we can see if you would be a candidate for Topaz treatment.
