Robert J. Valins, DPM
As founder of Total Foot and Ankle of Tampa Bay, Dr. Valins leads a talented, professional staff of doctors and medical assistants. Dr. Valins believes that each patient deserves friendly, well trained staff members who carefully listen to you and care about you and your health. Dr. Valins is committed to ensuring that patients who put their trust in Total Foot and Ankle of Tampa Bay receive the finest, most professional care anywhere in the area.
Dr. Valins completed his undergraduate degree at State University of New York in Binghamton graduating with a bachelor's degree in French Language and Literature. He then went on to pursue graduate studies in French and Italian Language and Literature at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and spent a year teaching in France. Ultimately, the sciences and medicine became his passion and Dr. Valins took his determination and talents to the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine graduating with a Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine in 1977. He completed his residency training in podiatric surgery at Pennsylvania College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1978.
After a lifetime in the northeast, Dr.Valins decided to move to the Tampa Bay area to practice podiatric medicine and surgery. In addition to his long term practices in Zephyrhills and Sun City Center, Dr. Valins is also a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association and the American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management Association and long term treasurer of the Hillsborough County Podiatric Association.
Dr. Valins is a devoted husband and father. His wife, Claudia, works with him in the office. They have three grown children, Andrew and Scott, who live in New York City and Whitney who lives in Miami.
During his spare time, Dr Valins loves to travel to Europe with his wife and family. He is an avid reader of current events, enjoys taking French, Italian and Spanish lessons to keep his vocabulary and accent current, and loves movies and exercise. Visiting his children is also most important to him.
Nathan T. Penney, DPM
Dr. Penney joined Total Foot and Ankle of Tampa Bay in 2009 after completing 4 years of training at the prestigious reconstructive foot and ankle surgery residency at Grant Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio where he performed over 2000 procedures. Dr. Penney has treated an assortment of conditions, ranging from bunions, hammertoes, and heel pain, to complex reconstructive foot and ankle disorders. Dr. Penney is trained in the latest surgical advances in both internal and external fixation, arthroscopy, and is one of a small list of national physicians certified to perform ankle joint replacement. However, Dr. Penney's treatment philosophy is one where all medical and conservative treatment options are explored before surgery is considered.
Dr. Penney has authored or coauthored several articles in various medical journals. He has presented research at medical conferences throughout the United States and Canada. He also authored a board review textbook to be used as a reference by physicians as they seek board certification.
Dr. Penney grew up in San Diego, California. He attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln on a full academic scholarship. He graduated from the honors program with a major in biology and minors in chemistry and psychology. Dr. Penney completed his 4 years of podiatric medical school at the Barry University School of Graduate Medical Sciences in Miami Shores, Florida, where he was actively involved in student leadership positions. There he served as the National President of the American Podiatric Medical Students Association.
Dr. Penney is a member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, the Florida Podiatric Medical Association, the American Podiatric Medical Association, and the American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management. In addition to his podiatric training, he is certified by the American Heart Association in Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support. He is active in his profession and is always focused on moving it forward in the community.
Dr. Penney is married to his wife, Analia, and has two young children, Preson (4) and Adriana (2). He enjoys spending time with his family, golfing, rock climbing, working out, and either watching or attending sporting events during his free time. Dr. Penney is also proficient in medical spanish.
