Do Bunions Go Away on Their Own?

If you notice a hard, bony bump on the side of your big toe, you may be wondering if it will go away on its own. Chances are it’s a bunion, and bunions don’t go away on their own. Fortunately, our podiatrist can help you get rid of a bunion. The podiatrists at Total Foot And Ankle Of Tampa Bay offer a wide range of podiatry services, including treatment of bunions. They have several locations including in Wesley Chapel, Sun City Center, Apollo Beach/Riverview, Zephyrhills, and Valrico/Bloomingdale, FL.

What You Need To Know About Bunions

You are more likely to develop a bunion if you have a genetic bone deformity which causes your big toe joint to protrude outward. Women are more likely to develop bunions because of wearing shoes which are too narrow. The big toe joint rubs against the inside of the narrow shoe, eventually causing a bunion.

Bunions begin small, and small bunions can be treated at home. You can try:

  • Wearing comfortable, wider shoes
  • Taking pain medication like Tylenol or ibuprofen
  • Taping your foot to cushion and support the bunion
  • Wearing inserts or pads in your shoes

As the bunion grows bigger, more and more bone is involved. Larger bunions need to be evaluated by a podiatrist. Our podiatrist may recommend:

  • Cortisone injections around the bunion to reduce swelling and pain
  • Custom orthotics to support your foot and the bunion
  • Splints to help realign your toe and foot
  • Bunion surgery, known as a bunionectomy, to remove the bunion
